Mosquito Abatement


Mosquitoes get to be a big problem without diligence around here. There are plenty of places that catch rain water, both intentional and not.

The University of North Carolina uses BTI to combat mosquitoes. It's a bacterial attack that stops larvae from becoming adults. It only works on mosquitoes and fungus gnats. It's safe for all other beings.

Pictured here are dunks and bits. Dunks last for 30 days and bits only 7, but bits are easier to spread in some places, like under the outdoor shower.

Outdoor Shower

I should probably call it an outhouse now that the toilet has been moved out here. My dad built me this shower out of pallet pieces last year. I got some of it painted with some leftover marine paint and exterior latex, but the floor, one inside wall, and one outside wall remain. Waiting for some dry weather to finish it up. The water is in a black bucket with a lid where the sun can heat it up. A kitchen sprayer delivers the water. The toilet is a luggabe loo on casters. It uses wood flakes to cover the waste. I make regular trips to the dumpster to discard the waste. There's an ordinary bathroom in my dad's house too. One project in the list is to roof part of it in bamboo so that I don't get a sunburn using the toilet. That's what the striped towel is for currently.

Wasps

I am not posting any pictures of wasps. This area provides lots of opportunity for nesting wasps. I'm using long distance spray to kill wasps when I can. I deal with nests by waiting for evening and knocking them down while the wasps are too sleepy to cope. Then I hit the anchor site with WD-40 so they can't rebuild.

Sitting Areas

The camp is nicely shaded but as you'd expect, the shade shifts in the course of a day. It helps to have sitting areas in several locations. One is even screened for when the bugs become too much. One is in the shed with a wood burning stove that makes winter days nice and comfy.
